Future urban vehicle fleet

Innovative data use and modelling is helping uncover important questions around social justice in our urban vehicle fleets.

As part of CAUL Hub’s project ‘Urban Systems for Liveability,’ Professor Jago Dodson and Dr. Tiebei (Terry) Li are researching the uptake of fuel-efficient vehicles in our cities – providing critical information on their distribution, affordability and accessibility to inform future policy. Their initial study mapped out the spatial patterns of VFE changes and modelled the level of household fuel savings from the VFE improvement. This research showed an uneven uptake of fuel-efficient vehicles across the city: inner urban areas, typically made up of wealthier households, have experienced higher level of VFE change, while people in the outer and fringe suburbs, typically less-affluent households, have showed lower VFE change.

The Living Pavilion opening

The Living Pavilion, a 17-day event celebrating Indigenous knowledge, ecological science and sustainable design, officially opened today at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville Campus. It was a beautiful and powerful opening ceremony with a moving Welcome to Country from Aunty Di Kerr (Wurundjeri Elder) and performances from Mandy Nicholson,  Mitch Tambo and the Djirri Djirri Dance Group. The evening was MC’d by Rueben Berg.

The Living Pavilion has been co-produced by CAUL Hub, Thrive Hub and The University of Melbourne’s New Student Precinct Project. Not only will The Living Pavilion demonstrate the importance of endemic species and the skill of the First Peoples in knowing and protecting the land, it will also involve research into urban biodiversity, air quality, microclimate, social connection and place-attachment. As this is a key research and knowledge brokering activity for CAUL Hub, the Hub is participating in numerous aspects of this research, as well as presenting to key stakeholders through the CAUL Hub talk series (#1 Indigenous City, #2 Nature in the City and #3 Liveable Cities).

Redefining our understanding of air quality with Indigenous knowledge thought lost

As part of the CAUL Hub’s major project focused on improving air quatliy in Western Sydney, it was identified that the four common European seasons don’t necessarily represent the weather patterns in Australia. When this was discussed during an Indigenous Advisory Group meeting, Co-chair Jason Barrow spoke of his knowledge of the seasonal calendar in Perth. He suggested considering a more meaningful set of seasons for the Sydney region to understand annual changes in air quality.

Following on from this, Steph Beaupark, an early career researcher was appointed as the CAUL Indigenous Student Research Intern and it was her role to consult with volunteers from the Indigenous community of the Sydney region and find out about their knowledge of seasons and weather patterns. The task was more challenging than Steph, or the team, expected.

Historical relationships between the academy and Indigenous knowledge holders have been turbulent. Through the assimilation era Indigenous knowledge was devalued, ignored, and outlawed. This has led to a loss of traditional weather knowledge in the region. The following decades have seen researchers borrow from surviving knowledge without always providing acknowledgement or remuneration to Indigenous knowledge holders. This historical context creates challenges for contemporary collaboration.

The team worked to build relationships and investigate new approaches to collaboration. A particular difficulty encountered was finding people to talk to, because there was no previous relationship established with the Indigenous community of Sydney.

Due to this fragmentation of traditional knowledges, Steph researched Indigenous concepts surrounding weather patterns at different times of the year, and was able to define a set of natural cycles based on Indigenous understanding of weather. The seven cycles are named according to the dominant feature, including temperature, rainfall, and wind speed. As such, most significantly, this work could be the start of relearning knowledge that was thought to have been lost.

Through the process, Steph learnt a lot about how to, and how not to engage with the Indigenous community. She learnt that emailing and calling was too direct and that the emphasis should be on relationhip building, and not expecting buying-in on the project, as there can be engagement overload. In the future, longer-term projects would be more effective, as it would allow time build strong, lasting relationships.

This work has been an enriching experience for the early career Indigenous scientist. In learning more about her own cultural heritage, Steph has seen the significant place Indigenous knowledge has in scientific research. She has grown her own understanding of Indigenous knowledge as dynamic and ever changing.

The next step in the research is to see if the seven identified cycles will provide a more meaningful way to conduct a region air quality analysis.

Incorporating Indigenous perspective into this project has opened up a whole new dimension to this work, and could be the key to understanding air quality variation in Western Sydney, and beyond.

39 threatened species found only in Australian cities

Australia is home to 39 urban-restricted threatened species – from giant gum trees, to ornate orchids, wonderful wattles, and even a tortoise. But with many of these species critically endangered, CAUL/TSR Hub researchers Kylie Soanes and Pia Lentini say that cities offer a golden opportunity to preserve species under threat, and engage people with nature.

Their research, published recently in an article for Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, showed that some of Australia’s most endangered plants and animals live entirely within cities and towns, often hidden in plain sight along railway lines, roadsides and schools. These threatened species have always lived in these locations, and as our cities have expanded they have incidentally become urban dwellers. But as the authors explain, space for nature in the city is quickly disappearing with urban growth and much is earmarked for future development.

In this recent article for The Conversation, Soanes and Lentini suggest we need to think differently about how and where we do conservation, get to know the species that live in our cities and involve urban communities in the process.

Lost and Found – Trees

ABC Radio National broadcasted a segment last week, exploring the world of trees. Entitled ‘Lost and Found – Trees,’ the segment featured a discussion on the importance of urban trees with CAUL Hub researcher Judy Bush.

Judy discussed the many ways in which green spaces in our cities contribute to sustainability. For example, trees can mitigate urban heat and daily connection with nature is important for our health and wellbeing and can also contribute to a ‘sense of place’ and stewardship for local areas. As an example, Judy pointed to Greening the West’s achievement of planting one million trees in Melbourne’s west. Not only does this initiative highlight the massive transformative potential of urban tree planting, it also reminds us how many more ways there are to engage people with nature.
